Spring Training

Spring has sprung in Robinson County, which means that we have been doing a little bit of this...

And a little bit of this...

And a WHOLE,

Lot

Of this!

I never realized how much patience my parents must have expended in teaching me to ride a bike with no training wheels (and I hope the same holds true for our kids some day when they look back on this time of learning)...but I have grown to appreciate it now, as an adult!  (Someone, please tell me teaching her to drive a car will be easier)

But in the end, seeing that smile

And hearing her proudly proclaim, "I can ride a bike with TWO wheels!"to nearly everyone we meet (whether we know them or not) makes it worth every second.

Although, I will also admit, finally seeing her riding away, so innocent, independent and care-free, was amazingly bittersweet.

(Cue the internal Abba soundtrack...and the waterworks--at least for me.)

"I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness and then I have to sit down for a while.
The feeling that I'm losing her forever--
and without really entering her world.
I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter--that funny little girl!

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute--the feeling in it--slipping through my fingers all the time.  Do I really see what's in her mind each time I think I'm close to knowing? She keeps on growing, slipping through my fingers all the time..."

Awww...that poem made me tear up. Did you write it or did you find it somewhere?

No, didn't write it (but thanks for thinking I could have)...just ripped it off of Abba :) I ball everytime I hear it.

Really looks like im super dad teaching Norah how to ride her bike. Truth is Angela did 90% of the teaching and 100% of the picture taking. My wife is awesome and has the patience of a rock. Love ya, Jason

Yes, the whole bike-riding thing requires a great deal of patience. I wasn't prepared for that. And perhaps that explains why our little girl is still on training wheels! But you've inspired me to take the bull by the horns and make this the summer of no training wheels. Hope I can get my husband on board with that!

I feel like I should send my dad a thank-you card for teaching me how to ride a bike 30 years ago!
